How Newport Trains Its Caregivers

Every caregiver Newport sends into a client’s home has been screened, trained, and oriented before their first visit — not after. Here’s exactly what happens before a Newport caregiver shows up at your door.

Pre-hire screening

Before a caregiver candidate is offered a position with Newport, they complete a structured screening process. Candidates who don’t clear every step don’t get hired.

Newport has an above-average rejection rate at this stage compared to industry norms — by design.

What every caregiver clears

  • Criminal background check — state and federal records
  • Texas Department of Public Safety record search
  • Office of Inspector General exclusion list verification
  • Sex offender registry check
  • Identity and right-to-work verification
  • Two prior-employer or supervisor reference checks
  • In-person interview focused on temperament, judgment, and motivation

Pre-placement training topics

Texas state-mandated training

Elder care fundamentals, infection control, rights of clients receiving long-term services.

Safe transfer techniques

Moving a client between bed, chair, walker, shower, wheelchair without injury.

Personal care basics

Dignified bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, feeding assistance.

Medication awareness

What caregivers can and cannot do under Texas regulations (reminders yes, administration no).

Emergency response

Recognizing stroke, heart attack, hypoglycemia, falls, elder abuse. When to call 911 vs. office.

EVV + documentation

How to check in/out, what to record in visit notes, when to escalate.

HIPAA + confidentiality

What stays in the home and how to handle the inevitable curiosity.

Specialty training

Dementia, diabetes, mobility decline, Parkinson’s, post-surgical recovery, end-of-life care.

In-home orientation with the client

Before a new caregiver works a regular shift, Newport sends a coordinator with them on the first visit so the client and family can meet the caregiver face-to-face, walk through the daily routine, and confirm fit.

If the personality match isn’t right, we send a different caregiver next time. We would rather take an extra week to find the right person than push through a placement that isn’t working.

Ongoing supervision and continuing education

Newport caregivers have a real supervisor, not just a scheduling system. Coordinators check in regularly — by phone, by visit, by reviewing EVV records and visit notes — and address issues before they become problems. Continuing education sessions are scheduled throughout the year so caregivers can refresh skills and stay current on Texas regulations and best practices.
